How Often Should You Really Clean Your Solar Panels?

How Often Should You Really Clean Your Solar Panels?

You bought solar to shrink a bill, and dust works against that every day the sun is up. The useful question is not whether to clean, but how often a cleaning earns its keep. For most homes in the Phoenix area, the answer lands between two and four times a year. Here is how to figure out where your roof falls.

Why Twice a Year Is the Floor in the Valley

Two conditions set that baseline: we get very little rain, and we get a great deal of airborne dust. Panels here can go months without a rinse of any kind, and every dry, breezy afternoon adds another layer of fine mineral powder to the glass. That layer does exactly what it looks like it does. It scatters and absorbs sunlight before the light ever reaches the cells underneath.

The loss builds slowly, which is the real trap. By the time an array looks dirty from the driveway, it has been giving you less for a long stretch. Cleaning twice a year, once heading into the strong spring production months and once after monsoon season winds down, keeps buildup from ever getting deep enough to matter much.

What Pushes a Roof Toward Four Times a Year

Some arrays collect far more than others, and the reasons are usually visible from the ground:

  • A low roof pitch. Panels mounted nearly flat hold dust in place. A steeper tilt sheds at least some of it when wind kicks up or a storm passes through.
  • Bare lots, washes, or unpaved roads nearby. If there is open desert, a dirt alley, or active construction within a block, your glass takes the extra deposit every time the wind blows.
  • Trees beside or above the array. Palo verde and mesquite shed pollen and fine litter in spring, and any overhanging branch gives birds a staging perch.
  • Birds already living under the panels. Droppings behave nothing like dust. They dry hard, bond to glass and frames, and block light completely where they land instead of dimming it.
  • Irrigation or pool spray reaching the roofline. Hard water plus dust leaves a bonded film that the occasional rain will not clear.

Two or three of those together, and quarterly service is usually the right call. When birds are the driver, cleaning by itself turns into a treadmill, which is why bird proofing and cleaning so often get scheduled on the same visit.

How to Check Instead of Guess

You do not need to climb anything to get a reliable read:

  1. Open your monitoring app and find a clear, mild day from last spring. Compare its peak output to a clear day this spring. Similar weather with a lower peak points to soiling.
  2. Stand well back from the house and look at the array at a low angle rather than straight on. A dull, even haze shows up from the side long before you can see it head on.
  3. Look for streaks running down from frame edges. Those are usually runoff from droppings or trapped grit washing down after a storm, and they mean something is sitting on top of the panel.
  4. Step outside near the array early on a spring morning and listen. Scratching or chirping under the panels means a bird problem is forming, not just a dust problem.

Build a Rhythm Instead of Reacting

Homeowners who get the most from their systems treat cleaning like an oil change. It goes on the calendar, it happens on schedule, and nobody waits for an ugly billing cycle to trigger it. A standing visit also means someone is on your roof a few times a year, which is how cracked glass, a loose clamp, or a fresh nest gets caught while it is still a small problem.

Two Bits Solar Cleaning washes residential arrays across the Valley using deionized water, so nothing is left behind on the glass and no soap runs off into your yard. If you are not sure whether your home is a twice-a-year or a four-times-a-year property, tell us where you are and what is around you and we will give you a straight recommendation.
