Bird Proofing Before Solar Installation vs. After: What's Better?

Bird Proofing Before Solar Installation vs. After: What's Better?

The gap under a solar array is close to ideal habitat for a pigeon or a dove. It is shaded, sheltered from wind and rain, warm in winter, and out of reach of almost every predator. Birds find it fast. The only real question is whether you close that gap before they discover it or after.

Proofing at Install Time Is the Easy Version

When your array is brand new, the space under the panels is clean and empty. That single fact removes most of the cost and nearly all of the complication:

  • There are no nests to remove and no timing questions about whether a nest is active.
  • There is no droppings buildup to clear off the roof deck, the tile, or the underside of the modules.
  • Nothing needs sanitizing, so a crew shows up, measures the perimeter, and fits the barrier.
  • The panels themselves are still spotless, so no cleaning is needed underneath or on top.

The job is almost purely mechanical at that point: a mesh barrier secured around the open perimeter so nothing can get underneath, attached without drilling into panels or frames so your equipment warranty stays intact. Fewer steps means a shorter visit and a lower price.

What Changes Once Birds Move In

After a colony establishes itself, the work grows in every direction. Nesting material has to come out, and it is rarely just a tidy nest. Expect twigs, palm fiber, feathers, insulation pulled from somewhere it should have stayed, and layers of droppings that have been baking on your roof for months.

Timing matters too. You cannot simply seal a barrier over an active nest with birds still inside, so the sequence has to account for what is actually living up there. The cleanup itself is unpleasant and genuinely worth leaving to someone with the right protection, since dried droppings break into airborne particles the moment you disturb them.

Then there is the damage already done. Acidic droppings sit on roof tile and flashing, nesting debris traps moisture against the deck, and birds have a habit of pecking at exposed wiring and conduit. The longer a colony stays, the longer that list gets.

After-the-Fact Proofing Still Pays for Itself

None of that means you missed your window. It means the job is larger, not that it stopped being worthwhile. Every month a colony stays is another month of accumulating droppings on your panels, more debris packed under the array, and more chance the damage reaches the roof surface instead of stopping at the surface of the glass.

Proofing after the fact also solves a problem that cleaning alone cannot. Wash an array with birds still nesting under it and you have bought a few weeks of clear glass. Close the perimeter and the cleaning holds.

If You Are Not Installing Anytime Soon

Most homeowners fall in the middle: the array has been up for a few years and nothing has moved in yet, or one pair has just started poking around. That is the best possible moment to act. Pricing sits closer to new-install territory, no eviction timing is involved, and you never have to deal with the cleanup at all.

A few things to look for before deciding:

  1. Walk the perimeter of the house and look up at the gap between panel edge and roof surface. If you can see daylight straight through, so can a bird.
  2. Check the ground and patio below the array for droppings, feathers, or dropped nesting material.
  3. Listen near the array early in the morning during late winter and spring, which is when nesting activity picks up in the Valley.

Two Bits Solar Cleaning installs bird proofing on new and existing arrays, handles the removal and cleanup when something is already living up there, and can add proofing to a regular panel cleaning visit. If you have seen a bird disappear under your panels even once, reach out before it becomes a household.
